EXILES: NAME IS COINCIDENCE.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

A perception may exist that the six-team Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Exiles Soccer Club got its name after a core group broke away from the parent Santa Clarita United Soccer Club just over a year ago.

The split, giving the region four club programs, has in some circles been blamed for diluting the talent base in the region. Maybe the Santa Clarita area is spreading its soccer too thin, some suggest.

The Exiles want to clear up a few things.

``Originally, this club was founded 17 years ago in Pasadena,'' publicity director Bob Arcos said. ``The founder of that club, E.B. Modha, started it with Rod Stewart and called themselves Exiles.

``When they left Santa Clarita United (last year), E.B. thought that Exiles was a cool name and he always liked it.''

So, contrary to a possibly popular belief, the Exiles contend the name is coincidental and nothing else.

It is widely known that the only thing Stewart loves more than music is soccer.

Stewart and ``Gazza'' were out drinking late one night before a practice, the final straw that got Gascoigne cut from the World Cup squad.

Stewart apologized and the talented midfielder has been left off England's roster (for now) for the 2000 European Championships.

Exiles, Part III: The new version of Exiles, an under-12 girls' squad, lost in the finals of the California Sun and Surf Tournament last weekend in Long Beach, falling 1-0 in double overtime to North Huntington Beach Huntington Beach, city (1990 pop. 181,519), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast, across from Santa Catalina Island, in an oil-producing area; inc. 1909. Exiles won their pool by beating the Murietta Hawks, Tustin Impact and Long Beach Strikers. It advanced to the finals by disposing of the Moreno Valley Heat and Torrance United.

Publicity friendly: The Las Virgenes Blazers, one of the top girls' club programs in Southern California, made national headlines when they introduced former U.S. national team coach Steve Sampson as the club's technical director last week.

The dialogue came well before the U.S.'s disappointing performance in World Cup 1998 that prompted the resignation of Sampson, who lives in nearby Agoura.
