EXIDE ELECTRONICS SELECTED AS A NAFTA PARTNER

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Exide Electronics Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: XUPS), the leading supplier of power management and power protection products, demonstrated its support of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) by accepting an invitation from President Bill Clinton to participate in the "American Jobs American Products: NAFTA" event. This gathering of 150 industry leaders who export domestically manufactured products into Mexico was held today on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C.
Exide Electronics was represented by James A. Risher, president and CEO; Hermann Metzler, vice president of International Sales; and Glenda Bryant, production associate. Products manufactured at Exide Electronics' North Carolina-based plant operations and displayed at the event included the Powerware(R) Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) and OnliNet(R) Network Power Management Software packages.
Exide Electronics exports products worldwide and has conducted business in Mexico for ten years. Revenues from products sold through independent Mexico-based distributors last year alone more than doubled to approximately $5 million.
"Exide Electronics views the NAFTA agreement to be a major step in helping to develop a very lucrative market and enhancing our ability to ensure American workers in North Carolina further job opportunities," said Risher. "Exide Electronics will continue to expand its efforts in Mexico. We are currently evaluating direct distribution as a means to augment the efforts of our existing distributors and accommodate market growth opportunities."
Exide Electronics is the largest company in the world dedicated exclusively to developing, manufacturing and servicing a full line of power management and power protection systems. The company has been recognized for its company-wide quality processes, including design, manufacturing and service, when it was awarded ISO 9001 registered-firm status earlier this year. According to a 1993 study conducted by Venture Data Corp., an independent computer industry research firm, Exide Electronics is the number one vendor of power management and power protection products and services in the world with a current market share of 15 percent.
