EXIDE ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER FISCAL 1996 RESULTS.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 1995--Exide Corporation (NYSE: EX), the world's leading manufacturer and marketer of automotive batteries, as well as battery accessories, chargers, and remanufactured starters and alternators, today reported results for its first fiscal quarter ended July 2, 1995.

Net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 1996 increased 162% to $432,320,000 from $165,067,000 for the same period last year. Fiscal 1996's first quarter loss was $14,678,000 or $0.74 loss per share compared to a loss of $41,000 or $0.00 per share in fiscal 1995.

Commenting on the results, Arthur M. Hawkins, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Exide, today, is a significantly different corporation than it was twelve months ago. Our results are now beginning to reflect the consolidation of the European acquisitions made last year. Although we have shown a loss in the first quarter, this is largely attributable to the inclusion of the European businesses whose earnings pattern is more seasonal than the North American business, and historically lose money in the first three calendar quarters. In fact, in the first quarter, the European businesses are performing better than forecast, principally as a result of pricing and restructuring which are being aggressively pursued by the new European management team."

Regarding the North American business, Mr. Hawkins said, "Exide's North American sales rebounded strongly following the abnormally warm winter and are up almost 30% compared with the previous year. We continue to be encouraged by the upturn in North American volume, as well as by price increases implemented by the company, which appears to have been accepted in the marketplace." -0-
