EXHIBITION OF THE PAINTINGS OF ERNESTO GUTIERREZ TO BE HELD AT GALERIA VANIDADES, FEB. 26-MARCH 26

MIAMI, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Galeria Vanidades (6355 N.W. 36th St., Virginia Gardens, Fla. 33166) announces the opening of and exhibition of the paintings by the Peruvian painter Ernesto Gutierrez, next Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.
Gutierrez, influenced by native Peruvian art and the masters of the French school, like Cezanne, Matisse, Gaughin, and Seurat, has forged a long and successful career, a product not only of his own natural talent, but also of intensive academic training pursued at the School of Fine Arts in Lima, Peru. Upon his graduation, during which Gutierrez was awarded the coveted Gold Medal, he completed additional training at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and also at the University of Wisconsin, in the United States, where he received his master of arts degree in 1974.
His paintings are characterized by minute brush strokes (in the style of George Seurat) and brilliant colors, strong and daring, covering a broad range of reds, oranges, greens, and purples, and underscored here and there with lines of neutral hues, like black, white and ivory, which add a dramatic and sensual edge to the compositions. He simplifies the forms, suggesting a cubist-realist style, in a way that adds to the dramatic effect, unequivocally his.
The themes of his paintings are inspired by the Indian natives and the Andean customs and culture, by the daily life of the people with whom he is strongly linked by blood lines (his mother was a descendant of the Incas), by the small towns hidden in the Andes mountains where he lived for 15 years, by the afternoon bullfights, and by the rich memories of his childhood; all of them have found dramatic expression in his painting and sculptures.
Ernest Gutierrez' work has been exhibited in important North American galleries, and in Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until March 26. Galeria Vanidades is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m, on Saturdays by appointment only. For additional information, call 305-871-6400.
