EXECUTIVES IN U.K. REPORT HIGHER STRESS THAN DO THEIR U.S. COUNTERPARTS; SURVEY SAYS IRRITABILITY IS KEY SYMPTOM

MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The pressures of competing in a world economy may be hitting executives in the United Kingdom harder than those in the United States, according to a recent survey commissioned by Robert Half International. British executives felt that 62 percent of their colleagues were excessively tense while 41 percent of executives in the United States felt that way.
The study was developed by Robert Half International Inc. (NYSE: RHI) and was conducted in both the United States and the United Kingdom by independent research firms which polled more than 100 executives in each country. Participants were asked, "What percentage of executives do you think suffer from excessive workplace stress?"
"The increasing pressure on management and staff to perform in today's volatile economy can create stress for otherwise competent and confident executives," said Max Messmer, chairman and chief executive officer of Robert Half International. "Managers in both nations face many of the same global demands, but those in the U.K. are still in the middle of a tough recession."
The survey also asked respondents to describe some of the typical indicators of job-related stress. The most frequently noted symptoms in each country were:

 2. Procrastination/ 2. Lateness/Absence from work

Messmer said: "If anxiety is this prevalent at managerial levels, it undoubtedly is impacting morale and productivity throughout the organization. It behooves top management to do everything possible to cultivate an atmosphere of team-building inside their companies as they ask employees to grapple with the competitiveness of today's business environment."
Robert Half International was founded in 1948. The New York Stock Exchange-traded firm has two major financial staffing divisions -- for permanent employment, Robert Half; and for temporary employment, Accountemps. The company has more than 150 offices in the United States, Canada and Europe.
