EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.IT'S been a topsy-turvy year in the accounting world, especially for the Big Five. Concerned about the impact of increasing revenue from management services on the objectivity of auditing, the Securities and Exchange Commission proposed banning such dual relationships. But after a highly public dispute, a compromise was reached allowing firms to continue offering multiple services to clients, though only under tough new public disclosure laws. During the turmoil, consulting units at Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young peeled off from their parent companies, while others appear likely to follow. But such movement has had little impact on the L.A. landscape, where there was no movement in the top five spots on this year's list. Instead, there was broad, slower growth than in the past, as the firms serviced the region's strong economy. That growth was reflected across the board, with the total number of accountants employed by the top 50 firms growing by 6.9 percent this past year. THE PACESETTER DELOITTE & TOUCHE LLP DELOITTE & Touche maintains its position as the largest accounting firm in Los Angeles County for the fourth consecutive year. The firm grew modestly in 2000, adding just a handful of accountants and other professionals. But that came after four years of strong growth that saw it nearly double the size of its local staff. Now, firm officials believe Deloitte & Touche is well positioned to handle its local business, according to Sharon Allen, regional managing partner. "We are appropriately reflecting the economy and the changes in the economy," Allen said. "Certainly everyone would agree that the economy is slowing down a bit." Even so, Deloitte & Touche continues to experience strong growth in its five Los Angeles County offices when it comes to servicing the burgeoning telecommunications and high-tech sectors. Its headquarters is on Bunker Hill. Parent company Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, one of the Big Five accounting firms, generated $11.2 billion in revenue in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2000. That's up from $10.6 billion for the prior fiscal year. Unlike the other Big Five firms, the company has so far made no move to break off its fast growing consulting business, which specializes in strategic, management, high tech and e-commerce services. The firms have been under pressure to do so by federal regulators concerned about potential conflicts of interest.
