PROCLAMATION by the Governor of the State of California

WHEREAS, first awarded in 1901, the Nobel Prize has been given to more than 700 Laureates for their outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, peace, and economics; and

WHEREAS, California has the largest concentration of Nobel Laureates in the world; and

WHEREAS, over the past decade, nearly 25 percent of all Nobel Laureates have been associated with California universities and research institutions; and

WHEREAS, the invaluable contributions of California's Nobel Laureates have helped the Golden State become a leader in the science and technology fields; and

WHEREAS, their extraordinary commitment to innovation and excellence has made a positive and lasting impact on our State and on the world; and

WHEREAS, from October 24-27, 2001, the Nobel Prize Centennial is being celebrated in California;'

NOW, THEREFORE, 1, GRAY DAVIS Davis, city (1990 pop. 46,209), Yolo co., central Calif.; settled in the 1850s, inc. 1917. It is an education center with light industry; machinery, processed foods, and computer equipment are produced. The extensive Univ. , Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim October, 2001 as "California Nobel Laureate Month."
