EXCURSION: PEBBLE BEACH BY OSMOSIS : HERE'S CHEAP WAY TO TASTE ITS FLAVOR.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

The best non-professional golfers in the nation will gather next week at famed Pebble Beach Golf Links Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of several well known courses in Pebble Beach, California and probably the most famous golf course in the Western United States. Four of the courses in the coastal community of Pebble Beach, including Pebble Beach Golf Links,[1]  to determine the final U.S. Amateur champion of the 1900s.

Most of us could never compete in such a prestigious event, which requires a handicap index of 2.4 or less just to qualify for elimination play and then, more often than not, sub-par rounds to advance to the final.

All of us, however, can play at Pebble Beach, which is not only one of the world's most beautiful courses but also a public venue. All it takes is a greens fee greens fee

 of $305, without cart.

There is a less-expensive way, however, to enjoy a golf excursion to the Monterey Peninsula The Monterey Peninsula in central California comprises the cities of Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, some unincorporated area of Monterey County and the private community of Pebble Beach.  area. Admittedly, it's not as awe-inspiring or history-rich as a round at Pebble Beach (which will host its fourth U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. These include:

next summer), but this budget tour is scenic enough and plenty challenging.

Five area courses combine to offer history, a regular PGA Tour The PGA Tour is an organization that operates the USA's main professional golf tours. It is headquartered in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA. Its name is officially rendered in all caps as “PGA TOUR".  stop, the first two stages of the annual tour qualifying school In professional golf the term Qualifying school is used for the annual qualifying tournaments for leading golf tours such as the U.S. based PGA and LPGA Tours and the European Tour.  and a quaint seaside test locals call ``the poor man's Poor man's is a common slang term used to compare one thing with another. It is not necessarily a derogatory term. It is usually used in a sentence as "X is a poor man's Y", with "X" being the person or thing one is referring to, and "Y" being the superior but similar person or  Pebble Beach.'' The five together can be played, with cart, for less than it costs to play Pebble Beach once.

The fab five:

Black Horse, Bayonet bayonet

Short, sharp-edged, sometimes pointed weapon, designed for attachment to the muzzle of a firearm. According to tradition, it was developed in Bayonne, France, early in the 17th century and soon spread throughout Europe.
GCs: Situated on the former Fort Ord Fort Ord was a U.S. Army post on Monterey Bay in California. It was established in 1917 as a maneuver area and field artillery target range and was closed in September 1994. Fort Ord was one of the most attractive locations of any U.S.  Army base in Seaside, about a half-hour from Pebble Beach, these long and difficult courses annually combine to determine West Coast survivors for the final stage of PGA Tour qualifying school.

Bayonet, as legend goes, was born an exercise in creative architecture. Designed by a left-handed general who played a fade, it has an abundance of left-turning holes, highlighted by the consecutive dog-legged trio of Nos. 11, 12 and 13 - Bayonet's Attack Corner.

The course, which runs uphill or downhill on nearly every hole, features large, quick and difficult greens and generously wide fairways on most holes. But anyone spraying shots too far sideways will have real trouble with wide, towering, near-half-century-old cypress trees that flank most fairways on the front nine.

Black Horse plays shorter than Bayonet but is also narrower and can be a lot more wind-buffeted.

Play both on the same day and you get a twilight-rate reload (1) To load a program from disk into memory once again in order to run it. Reload is entirely different than reinstall. Reinstall means that you have to run the install program from a CD-ROM or floppy disk and perform the installation procedure over again.  fee and an earlier-than-twilight starting time Noun 1. starting time - the time at which something is supposed to begin; "they got an early start"; "she knew from the get-go that he was the man for her"

(weekdays, with cart) also will save you enough to treat members of your foursome to the best golf-course hot dogs anywhere. These sauerkraut-and-chili-laced, build-your-own biggies are as tough to finish as either of Fort Ord's excellent courses.

See : Mischievousness
Park near old-town Monterey, this 102-year-old layout is the oldest course west of the Mississippi.

Distinguished by towering pines, narrow, immaculately groomed fairways and traditional small greens, Delmonte has been described by Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  native and former U.S. Open champion Johnny Miller as ``sneaky, hard and fun to play.''

The priciest of our budget five, Delmonte is worth the splurge of $98 (every-day fee, including cart) for the history as much as the conditions.

Poppy Hills: Home to the Northern California Golf Association, this course - one of three used in the PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution. It was not widely used.

(2) (Programmable Gate Array) See gate array and FPGA.

SCGA Software Carrier Group Alarm
Members Club in Temecula. Golfers showing their SCGA card and photo identification can play for $45 instead of the usual $115 weekday rate for non-residents.

That's the good news. The bad news is it will be difficult to focus on golf given the beauty of this course, which was carved out of the Delmonte Forest and teems with wildlife. You might not recall your score, and it's a good bet you won't care: It's that kind of an enjoyable experience.

Poppy Hills might lack the waterfront splendor of neighboring Pebble Beach, but it hardly comes up short in the scenic department. But bring a jacket. The weather can change quickly in these woods.

Pacific Grove: From its historic lighthouse to its spectacular, ocean-fronted back nine to its tight and deer-populated front nine, this is one neat course. Add the best greens fees in the area ($15 to easily walk 18 holes at twilight rate), and this ``poor man's Pebble Beach'' is worth a stop for scenic or financial reasons on any trip to the Monterey Peninsula. If you play it in the afternoon, count on going up as much as three clubs when playing into the winds that buffet holes 11-17.
