EXCURSION: MOUNTAIN VIEW GOLF COURSE IS SHORT, SWEET.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

SANTA PAULA Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  - Reasonable rates, really good greens and a wonderful rural setting make the 40-year-old Mountain View Golf Course worthy of an excursion excursion /ex·cur·sion/ (eks-kur´zhun) a range of movement regularly repeated in performance of a function, e.g., excursion of the jaws in mastication.  from the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

and several challenging holes despite a white-tees-maximum course length of just 5,501 yards.

Any list of the best holes at Mountain View has to start with the 218-yard, par-3 11th hole, which requires an uphill tee shot to an elevated green fronted by a huge bunker on the left and large trees on both sides.

Like many holes on this tight, Anthony Pawluk-designed course, No. 11 leaves golfers feeling as if they must hit their tee shots into tiny landing areas. The tee shot on No. 11 demands accuracy or scrambling ability - especially if the ball lands in the trees short and right of the green.

The Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Golf Association ranks No. 11 as just the fourth-toughest hole on the course - behind the 390-yard, par-4 eighth hole, the 395-yard, par-4 17th hole and the 550-yard, par-5 second hole. Stand at the back of the tee box on No. 11 and see if you agree with that ranking with a long iron or fairway wood as your club of choice.

Most of the tightest tee shots are on the more heavily wooded and more scenic back nine at Mountain View, notably the 472-yard, par-5 15th hole, which seems narrower than it is because of the height of the trees flanking flanking

both sides of the fairway leading away from the tee box.

Trees aren't the only hazard on No. 15, which has out-of-bounds running the entire right side of the fairway.

Another fun hole to drive is the 310-yard, par-4 13th, which requires an uphill tee shot to a blind landing area on a fairway bordered by thick trees. Whatever advantage Mountain View gives a golfer in short length, it takes back in the amount of accuracy that is required to stay out of the trees Out of the Trees was a television sketch show pilot written by Graham Chapman, Douglas Adams and Bernard McKenna and broadcast on BBC 2. The show shared some of the stream-of-consciousness style of Monty Python's Flying Circus, of which Chapman was a member. . The course's challenges and advantages are equally enjoyable because of the country atmosphere.

The first six holes at the Santa Paula course negotiate the lower north side of the facility and the best of those is the par-5 second - the longest on the course by nearly 80 yards. Wide enough in the fairway, this dogleg-left hole still requires accuracy, or those flanking trees will take away the angles needed to reach the green in regulation.

Nos. 3 and 6 are both solid middle-distance par-3 holes, the 170-yard sixth getting golfers ready for the upcoming uphill trek into the narrower back nine.

Water is in play on six holes, depending on the season, but is definitely a factor on the left side of approach shots to the ninth green and right side of tee shots on No. 17.

Easily walkable, Mountain View extends its scenery to those who choose to ride as all will get open-top carts.
