EXCITING WEEK ON TAP FOR LOCALS.

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON Community Sports

Expect an exciting week in high school sports with local teams trying to extend their seasons in the Southern Section basketball and soccer playoffs.

Second-round matchups are scheduled today and Wednesday, and the quarterfinals are Friday and Saturday.

In boys' basketball, Hart (24-3) plays host to Riverside Poly (21-7), and Saugus (20-7) plays at Rowland of Rowland Heights (23-6) in Div. I-A matchups. In girls' basketball Wednesday night, second-seeded Hart (25-1) takes its 22-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

``Obviously, we were happy to beat Ventura in the first round, but now it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  to focus on the next game,'' Saugus guard Neil Diorio said. ``Once you get through one round, you immediately have to worry about the next team. That's the way it is in the playoffs.''

Hart is alive in the Div. II boys' soccer playoffs, and the Canyon and Valencia girls' teams are still going in Div. II. Also, Div. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Christian hopes to advance in Div. VI boys' soccer.

Saugus is the region's only boys' basketball program to win a Southern Section title, taking the 3A championship in 1987. Although the team isn't among the division's top 10 in the Southern Section's final rankings, Saugus has a ``puncher's chance'' because of the team's combination of height - 6-foot-7 B.J. Willkomm is the school's all-time leading scorer - and outside shooting.

Plus, Saugus might be the division's most improved team, which is significant in the playoffs. The Centurions have won six in a row, including a 63-62 victory at Hart in the second-to-last game of the regular season. Saugus proved how far it's come when it defeated Ventura 66-38 Friday, after beating the Cougars by eight points in January.

``We took control of the game. Our guys played very well,'' Saugus coach Jeff Hallman said.

on Friday was a bit rocky considering it nearly blew an 18-point lead before outlasting the visitors.

Hart has won three league titles in a row but hasn't advanced past the second round during that time, so the pressure is on - especially considering the school has one of the tournament's best records. Also, Hart has played a difficult nonleague schedule, so there are no excuses this year.

This is the time of year when a player such as Adam Rich Adam Rich (born on October 12 1968) is an American actor born in Brooklyn, New York City. He is arguably best remembered for playing youngest son Nicholas Bradford on the 1970s television drama Eight is Enough , Hart's undisputed leader, creates lasting memories by taking his team to another level. ...

The Valencia girls' team probably will advance to the quarterfinals by defeating Palmdale. The Vikings beat Palmdale in a nonleague game last month, but they figure to be heavily challenged to get much further. Hart, led by UCLA-bound Ashlee Trebilcock, is primed to qualify for its third consecutive Div. I-A final. The Indians have lost to San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928. Camp Pendleton, a large U.S. marine base, adjoins the city, which is chiefly residential.  in the championship two years in a row, and San Clemente is seeded No. 1 this season.

--After years apart, Saugus baseball coach Casey Burrill and his brother, Brady, plan to be together at West Ranch High, which opens this fall. Casey, a former Hart standout, is planning to be the school's first baseball coach, and Brady, formerly of Valencia, has agreed to be an assistant.
