series that begins Friday. The teams are headed in different directions in the standings.

USC is on a hot streak, but UCLA entered Tuesday night's nonconference game at Long Beach State with a program-record 13 consecutive losses.

``I think it's a team effort,'' Savage said of his team's struggles. ``We just need to play better baseball in all areas.''

A rebuilding phase was to be expected at UCLA after nine players were drafted last season, but these growing pains grow·ing pains

were not anticipated. Returning starters Chris Denove and Jarrad Page Jarrad Page (born October 19, 1984) was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 7th round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played for UCLA in his collegiate career. Before attending UCLA, Page grew up in San Leandro, California, attending San Leandro High School, where Page was the top  were supposed to anchor the offense, but are both batting below .200. The pitching staff entered the week with a 5.69 ERA.

The Bruins were winless in March and opened Pac-10 play last weekend, being swept by Arizona.

UCLA's woes deepened when junior infielder Sean Smith Sean Smith may refer to one of the following:

, who is hitting .301, injured his shoulder last weekend and was limited to one at-bat in the three-game series. He is doubtful for this weekend.

USC is two games behind first-place Arizona after winning two of three against Washington. Monday's loss to the Huskies was just the Trojans' third in 11 games, a streak during which USC catcher Jeff Clement has had a hit in every game.

Savage was the pitching coach at USC from 1997 to 2000 before taking the head-coaching job at UC Irvine. He left the Anteaters for UCLA in July.

``I'm certainly excited to be going back to 'SC,'' Savage said. ``But, like I've said all along, it's an honor and a privilege to be at UCLA and following in the tradition of someone like Gary (Adams). We're going to get this program to a high standard that it expects and is used to. But it will take some time to get there. Our kids are working extremely hard.''

Hector Ambriz (.355) and Will Penniall (.330) are among the Bruins' bright spots. Ambriz (2-2, 2.88 ERA), a sophomore right-hander, is the team's only starter with multiple wins and one of two members of the staff with an ERA below 5.00.

``Certainly, we're all disappointed with the way we've played,'' Savage said. ``We know what we're going through, and we know what we have to do to change it. Every challenge is filled with opportunity and we have to seize the one that's on the table.''

--Honors: Pepperdine's David Uribes and Kea Kometani were among four players recognized as West Coast Conference Players of the Month for March.

Kometani, a senior right-hander, won four consecutive starts, including two complete games. He had a 1.04 ERA in 34 2/3 innings. The sophomore outfielder reached base in all five plate appearances Sunday, when he had a career-high four hits. He had two hits Friday, including a triple, with two RBI and two stolen bases.

--Taking on the champs: Cal State Northridge gets one of its biggest challenges of the season this weekend when the Matadors play host to defending College World Series champion Cal State Fullerton.
