He was released without bail after the processing hearing.

At that time, a preliminary hearing date will be set. The preliminary hearing is expected to begin in six-to-12 weeks.

Iacenda remained in Las Vegas on Wednesday night and unavailable for comment.

Iacenda's lawyer, Tom Pitaro, said he believed the case could be settled before going to trial.

``It doesn't appear to be very substantiated charges,'' Pitaro said. ``I feel very confident looking at the affidavits that the kid is being falsely accused. I'm not going into the facts. That's inappropriate.

``I'm confident we'll favorably take care of this successfully and give him his life back,'' he said. ``You get a charge like this and it gets blasted out. It's really tough on a young guy.''

USC officials said they would withhold Iacenda from competition until they can determine the facts of the case. That will have little effect on his playing career, because USC coaches decided to redshirt Iacenda last week, which meant he would not play in any games.

Iacenda had appeared in only one game, and had been bothered by foot and shoulder injuries most of the season.

``(Iacenda) was shocked that this happened,'' USC coach John Robinson Several notable individuals have been named John Robinson: Politicians

said. ``It is something he and his family have to deal with. The worst thing is this could wind up haunting you even if they dismiss it.''

According to Bloxham, the incident occurred July 7 in a Las Vegas hotel room. A criminal complaint was signed on Sept. 26 and charges were filed.

Bloxham said his office could still drop the charges. ``It's never too late for anything,'' he said.

According to several current and former Hart students, Iacenda had a long-term relationship with the alleged victim.

Iacenda became one of the area's most prolific running backs during his successful three-year career at Hart.

He led the Indians to the Division II title last season and was a two-time Division II Player of the Year.

Iacenda scored a Southern Section-record 99 touchdowns at Hart, and had 604 points in his career, second most in state history.

He also rushed for more than 4,000 yards. Hart was 35-5 the past three years.

``As good as he is an athlete, he's an even better citizen,'' Hart coach Mike Herrington said.
