The u.s. justice department categorizes the crime of carjacking as a "completed or attempted Robbery of a motor vehicle by a stranger

Eddie Pugh, 17, entered the plea shortly before his trial was about to begin in Van Nuys Superior Court on three felony felony (fĕl`ənē), any grave crime, in contrast to a misdemeanor, that is so declared in statute or was so considered in common law.  charges, two of which prosecutors dropped as part of the agreement.

``Mr. Pugh was interested in getting on with his life, a substantial portion of which he still has left to live,'' said his attorney Brian Waite. ``He just wanted to put this behind him.''

Pugh, a Foothill League all-star defensive back last year, was accused of three felonies in a bungled bun·gle

Dec. 9 carjacking of a Pizza Hut deliveryman on Haskell Avenue in Van Nuys. He had been ordered to stand trial as an adult.

The deliveryman said his two attackers ran off after he was able to force a gun out of one of their hands. Pugh and a companion were arrested a short distance away while walking on the San Diego Freeway The San Diego Freeway (Interstate 405, and the part of Interstate 5 south of the El Toro Y[1]) is one of the principal north-south highways in Southern California, and the major beltway of I-5 running through Southern California. .

Deputy District Attorney Margo Childress said the plea agreement - tougher than some previous offers - was reached after the attorneys finally received a recording of a 911 call made by the deliveryman.

She said the deliveryman describes one of his attackers as wearing clothing very similar to what Pugh had on when arrested.

``I think identity of the attackers was really the main issue in this case and that was really cured by the victim's ability to describe the clothing they were wearing in detail,'' Childress said. ``I think in the end they recognized the strength of the case.''

Waite said the tape made no difference and that instead Pugh wanted to take no chances on a conviction, which prosecutors have said could have sent him to prison for more than 10 years.

As part of the plea bargain, charges of attempted robbery and attempted burglary were dismissed against Pugh, who is scheduled to be formally sentenced Sept. 25.

Waite said he also is trying to work out an agreement on the weapons case with another prosecutor. He noted that Pugh only has five months more to serve on the carjacking since he has been in custody much of the time since his Dec. 9 arrest.
