EVault Helps Simmons Rest Easy With Data Backup; Top Mattress Vendor Tosses Tape and Turns to Online Data Protection.

EMERYVILLE, Calif. -- EVault, Inc., the trusted experts in enterprise level online backup Using the Web to store copies of data for backup. There are numerous providers on the Internet that charge for storage, and fees are typically based on capacity. Online backup services provide offsite backup, which is essential for disaster recovery. See backup types.  and recovery solutions, today announced Simmons Canada Inc., the leading manufacturer of bedding in Canada, has chosen EVault's online data protection services. Simmons selected EVault iSeries, a backup and recovery solution designed specifically for IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  iSeries (formerly AS/400) midrange computers.

Data protection has come to the forefront of IT agendas following a recent string of data losses within the corporate sector. In 2003, a catastrophic power failure caused a serious loss of computing capability for Simmons Canada Inc.'s four divisions. The situation was further complicated as Simmons was unable to retrieve its backup tapes from the company's storage vendor at the time -- rendering the disaster recovery plan and the ready-and-waiting hot site useless.

To avoid these issues going forward, and to increase backup reliability and IT operational efficiency, Simmons recently overhauled its data backup process -- putting to bed its manual tape-based system. "Off-site backup is of no value if you cannot get data back when you require it," said IT manager Les Tomczak, Simmons Canada Inc.

With EVault's backup and recovery service, Simmons leverages its existing infrastructure and Internet connections to reliably backup and transfer data from its servers to a secure Tier-1 EVault data center. Simmons' data is now transferred off-site every half hour, and can be recovered down to the individual file level, should the need arise.

EVault iSeries also allows Simmons administrators to perform "hot backups," which does not require taking the systems offline or having users log off -- providing significant performance advantages and increasing uptime. Via its database trigger See trigger.  technology, EVault iSeries is able to complete a 100-200GB snapshot in as little as 2-3 seconds versus up to an hour with IBM's Checkpoint process.

"With our previous backup service that transferred data to tape, we had to take systems offline, which impacted production as we operate in four different time zones," said Tomczak. "With EVault, not only are we getting a superior backup solution that doesn't take our systems offline, but we can get back up and running more quickly."

EVault's advanced data compression data compression

Process of reducing the amount of data needed for storage or transmission of a given piece of information (text, graphics, video, sound, etc.), typically by use of encoding techniques.
and delta-processing technology, EVault DeltaPro(TM), is 200 times more efficient in storage usage than tape, significantly reducing the amount of data required for transmission to a backup server A computer in a network used to store copies of files from client machines or other servers. Such servers typically have their disks set up in a RAID configuration to provide fault tolerance. Degree to which the fuel mixture in an internal-combustion engine is compressed before ignition. It is defined as the volume of the combustion chamber with the piston farthest out divided by the volume with the piston in the full-compression position (
at best, Simmons is seeing compression of approximately 15:1 using EVault technology. The mattress company has more than 320GB worth of restorable data, which compressed only takes up approximately 25GB of space in the backup vault.

Using EVault iSeries, Simmons has a more automated and accessible backup solution for less than the total cost of ownership of its previous manual tape-based system. EVault's offering provides many of the benefits of a high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  solution without the high price tag, enabling Simmons to sleep better at night knowing the company's data is protected should disaster strike again.
