The 23rd annual event is sponsored by Glendale Beautiful, the Pacific Rose Society and the city of Glendale's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Division.

Normally the show runs for one day, but this year it has been extended to two days due to popular demand.

"It started out in Fremont Park just as a rose-pruning demonstration, with just a few people," said Doyle Kutch, president of Glendale Beautiful, a nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

The show moved to the Glendale Adult Recreation Center and then eventually to the civic auditorium to accommodate vendors who wanted to attend. Last year, it drew 700.

Kutch said the event has grown beyond rose pruning.

"As we get more educated and build homes on hillsides, there's other things you need to learn besides how to plant roses and geraniums," he said.

This year's event includes seminars on shade and fruit tree planting and care, vegetable gardening, mulching and composting.

The show opened Saturday and will run today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glendale Civic Auditorium at 1401 N. Verdugo Road. Admission is $3 for adults. Children will be admitted free.

In addition to the seminars, more than 60 vendors have set up shop at the show to demonstrate their products.
