Sir Daniel Cooper, 1st Baronet, GCMG (1 July 1821 - 5 June 1902) was the first speaker of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales. Also, he was a noted philatelist.

, is in town this week and will take part Wednesday in Santa Clarita's Audubon Christmas Bird Count The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a census of birds in the Western Hemisphere, performed annually in the early Northern-hemisphere winter by volunteer birders. The purpose is to provide population data for use in science, especially conservation biology, though many people , one of hundreds of counts across the nation.

``The Santa Clara River is, of course, one of the most spectacular natural ecosystems left in Southern California,'' Cooper, an environmental consultant, said in a recent interview.

On Wednesday, seasoned birdwatchers This is a list of the world's greatest birdwatchers, based on the number of species of birds seen. Depending on the taxonomic viewpoint, there are about 8,800–10,200 living bird species.  and novices are invited to help document the birds found in the area, particularly along the Santa Clara River. The group will meet at dawn in Valencia.

Similar Audubon Society bird counts will be done over a three-week period nationwide.

``The effort is to connect people with some of the natural communities that are out there -- get out in nature,'' Cooper said. ``We want to help them build their appreciation for things natural in the area.''

This is the fourth year of the local count. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring jackets and binoculars. Novices will be teamed with experts, and all will meet for lunch at Hart Park to tally their discoveries. Those who want their finds published in the society's annual count are asked to pay $5.

``There are golden eagles out there. I've had prairie falcons fly over me,'' Cooper said. ``There are roadrunners running around the city of Santa Clarita. You just have to learn to look for them.''

Last year in Newhall Park, birders were surprised to see a rare painted redstart, ``a really spectacular bird from Mexico,'' Cooper said.

``It was totally unexpected, and what was really interesting is that five others were wintering in L.A. this year, and all of them have returned. We're not sure if the Newhall one did. We'll look for it.''

Last year, about 130 species were spotted locally by about 30 people.

``It's good for people who haven't done it before because you see birds in your yard and never have a chance to find out what they are,'' Cooper said.

``We just want to get people out. People who go to the mall and play tennis are our targets.''
