EVENTS TO HIGHLIGHT DIVERSITY.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The city's Human Relations Forum plans several events from now through January to highlight Santa Clarita's growing cultural diversity.

Some of the events featured during ``A Season of Diversity'' are art exhibits, international music and dance, interfaith gatherings and multicultural story times and crafts for children.

``The city of Santa Clarita is a diverse, growing community, and it is important that we learn to understand and appreciate the cultures, traditions and beliefs of our next-door neighbors,'' Mayor Laurene Weste said.

All of the events are free, with the exception of Friday's Bayanihan Filipino Dance Performance, which will raise funds for the city's sister city mission to build a medical facility in Sariaya, the Philippines.

``A Season of Diversity'' began with the opening of the Cuba Oriente Contemporary Painting for Eastern Cuba Gallery. This exhibit highlights 60 works from Cuba's eastern region, often described as the heartland of Cuban culture, and will be displayed through Oct. 14 in the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  Art Gallery.

On Oct. 18, World War II veterans from the Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team A regimental combat team was a provisional major infantry unit of the United States Army during the Second World War and Korean War.  theater. Many members of the 442nd were held in internment camps yet later their unit became one of the most highly decorated in U.S. history.

On Oct. 25, the Negro Baseball League will have a panel of speakers, also in Valencia High's theater. The league, which produced future Hall of Famers such as Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron, was active in the 1950s, when blacks were barred from Major League Baseball "MLB" and "Major Leagues" redirect here.
