EVENTS SET TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH; FAMED TUSKEGEE AIRMEN TO BE SALUTED AT CITY CEREMONY.Byline: Greg Botonis Daily News Staff Writer Events in honor of Black History Month will begin today with an African-American art show hosted by the Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County. The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale . Other events will include a benefit dance, a gospel concert, a dinner and the unveiling of a monument to the Tuskegee Airmen Tuskegee Airmen Black servicemen of the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) who trained at Alabama's Tuskegee Army Air Field in World War II. They constituted the first African American flying unit in the U.S. military. . ``The only way people can appreciate and understand each other is to know each other,'' Lancaster Vice Mayor Henry Hearns said at a news conference announcing the lineup. ``This celebration is not just to tell the story of a few people but to understand and better communicate with each other. The art show hosted by the high school district will begin at noon today at the Stanley Kleiner Center at Lancaster City Park, 44301 10th St. W. Artist Clarence Pointer will draw free pencil portraits for children. Artwork by Thurman Hackett also will be on display. A $2 donation is requested. Kappa Alpha Psi Kappa Alpha Psi (KAΨ) is the second-oldest collegiate Greek-letter fraternity with a predominantly African American membership and the first black intercollegiate fraternity incorporated as a national body. fraternity will host a ``Krimson and Kreme'' Valentine's Ball at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Lancaster Knights of Columbus Knights of Columbus, American Roman Catholic society for men, founded (1882) at New Haven, Conn. (where its headquarters are still located), by Father Michael J. McGivney. Hall, 719 W. Ave. M. All proceeds from the $25 black-tie affair will go toward scholarships. Ventriloquist Willie Tyler will perform and Hackett's work will be on display at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Lancaster Public Library, 601 W. Lancaster Blvd. Admission is free. The African-American Scholarship Union of the Antelope Valley Union High School District will present a Gospel Fest from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 21 at The Vineyard vineyard, land on which cultivation of the grape—known as viticulture—takes place. As many as 40 varieties of grape, Vitis vinifera, are known. Church, 1011 E. Ave. I. Gospel dancers, steppers, drill teams and choirs will all be on hand. Requested donation is $5. The third annual Black History Month Celebration Program/Dinner hosted by Lockheed-Martin Skunk skunk, name for several related New World mammals of the weasel family, characterized by their conspicuous black and white markings and use of a strong, highly offensive odor for defense. Works employees will be held Feb. 27 at the Essex Convention Center, 858 W. Jackman Ave., Lancaster. A free exhibit titled ``Black Inventions'' highlighting contributions of African-Americans from the 19th century to today will be on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Advance dinner tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for children. To close out the celebration, the city will hold a commemoration for the Tuskegee Airmen from 3 to 4 p.m. Feb. 27.
