EVENT CONNECTS PETS WITH HOMES.

Byline: Heather MacDonald Staff Writer

SAUGUS - It didn't take long Sunday for Melissa Horan and her family to pick out a new addition.

The kitten with the pink identification label was hard to miss - she bounced from one side of the cage that she shared with her mother and about a half-dozen siblings and then back again, pouncing on things visible only to her tiny gray eyes.

``She's spunky spunk·y

,'' said Horan, 21, of Agua Dulce Agua Dulce is Spanish for "sweet water". It also refers to various locations:

In the United States:
  • Agua Dulce, California
  • Agua Dulce, El Paso County, Texas

. ``She's jumpy and the wild one. She'll fit in.''

Horan's family adopted both the kitten and its mom at the Castaic Animal Shelter's Adopt-a-Pet event at the PetCo store on Bouquet Canyon Road. Volunteers brought about two dozen dogs and cats, hoping to find them all good homes.

``We had two cats, but one ran away,'' said Mike Horan For the football player of the same name see Mike Horan (football player).

, Melissa's father. ``We only wanted a friend for our cat, but didn't want to split up the mom from her kitten. They'll adjust better that way.''

As Labradors and shepherd mixes strained against the leashes held by the shelter's volunteers and their paws slipped on the store's linoleum linoleum (lĭnō`lēəm), resilient floor or wall covering made of burlap, canvas, or felt, surfaced with a composition of wood flour, oxidized linseed oil, gums or other ingredients, and coloring matter.  floor, families debated the merits of the tawny taw·ny

``I like kittens the best,'' said Zachary Kret, 4, as he struggled to decide which one to take home with his 8-year-old brother, Ben, burying his face in black kitten fur.

Dogs stretched out in front of their admirers, enjoying the attention and taking advantage of the opportunity for a good ear scratching. Other than the playful kitten adopted by the Horans, all of the cats slept in their cages, disdainfully dis·dain·ful
