3-day-old Piru fire, Ventura County sheriff's deputies on Sunday drove street by street, urging residents of Piru and outlying parts of Fillmore to voluntarily evacuate.

Once contained within the Los Padres National Forest Los Padres National Forest is a forest located in southern and central California, which includes most of the mountainous land along the California coast from Ventura to Monterey, extending inland. Elevations range from sea level to 8,831 feet. , the 10,000-acre blaze gained new life from fierce Santa Ana winds Santa Ana Winds may refer to:
1. Santa Ana wind, a local Southern California reference to Föhn winds, a meteorological phenomenon occurring as a layer of wind is forced over a mountain range -- drying the air -- which then passes over the crest and begins to move downslope --
and, like fires across Southern California, roared to the south. The two towns stand about 10 miles apart along the largely agricultural state Highway 126 corridor, just west of Santa Clarita.

``It's not an imminent danger to Fillmore and Piru, but it's moving that way and it's moving fast,'' said Kathy Good, spokeswoman for Los Padres, which wraps to the north of Ventura County. ``It's still a good distance away. This is a precautionary measure.''

Also in the line of the Piru Fire on Sunday was the Hopper Mountain Wildlife Refuge, habitat for the California condor. The magnificent birds, once on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955.  of extinction, have been bred in captivity and released at the refuge near the forest under the care of the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife.

And while life and property were the focus of firefighting efforts, forest officials were concerned the fire would be disastrous for endangered species endangered species, any plant or animal species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities. In 1999 the U.S. government, in accordance with the U.S.  in the forest, including the Southwest willow flycatcher bird and the Southwestern arroyo toad, Good said. That evaluation could begin as early as today.

The fire started Thursday afternoon on Piru Canyon Road near Lake Piru and consumed about 300 acres before it was all but contained Saturday night, Good said. It jumped the containment line to the northwest and took off Sunday morning when winds began whipping.

``It jumped the containment in an area that is very inaccessible, very rugged terrain,'' she said.
