EUROPEANS SEEKING A LITTLE REVENGE.Byline: Greg Wilcox Golf Most years the Alfred Dunhill Cup The Alfred Dunhill Cup was a team golf tournament which ran from 1985 to 2000. It was for three man teams of professional golfers, one team representing each country, and was promoted as the "World Team Championship". helps wrap up the European Tour season, a feel-good event featuring three-man teams representing 16 countries. Everybody plays for national pride and a $1.5 million purse. But almost nobody notices. Not so this year. Thanks to the sniping at the Ryder Cup Ryder Cup Biennial team golf event first held in 1927. It was originally played between teams of golfers from the U.S. and Britain; since 1979 players opposing the U.S. have been chosen from all of Europe. The trophy was donated by the British seed merchant Samuel Ryder. last month, the tone of the proceedings should be different and some matches less jovial (Jules' Own Version of the International Algebraic Language) An ALGOL-like programming language developed by Systems Development Corp. in the early 1960s and widely used in the military. Its key architect was Jules Schwartz. . The gallery ringing the Old Course at St. Andrews Fife, Scotland, might be a little more rowdy. And the press may be poised for some more American bashing. Seems that the Ryder Cup left the continent with a hangover that just won't go away. So when the American team of Mark O'Meara Mark Francis O'Meara (born January 13, 1957) is a professional golfer who was a prolific tournament winner on the PGA Tour and around the world from the mid 1980s to the late 1990s. In 2007 he entered his first season on the Champions Tour. , Tom Lehman and Payne Stewart arrived in Scotland for the matches, which feature 10 members of the European team and its captain, Mark James, they found that the British media has a collective memory a lot longer than Justin Leonard's winning putt. That being the case, Lehman, Stewart and O'Meara will probably march to the driving range with less of a swagger, not wanting to incite To arouse; urge; provoke; encourage; spur on; goad; stir up; instigate; set in motion; as in to incite a riot. Sam Torrance, assistant captain of the European team, had described Lehman's behavior as disgusting after Sunday's final Ryder Cup round, which the Americans won in decisive fashion. They celebrated the same way, too. So it was a contrite con·trite adj. 1. Feeling regret and sorrow for one's sins or offenses; penitent. 2. Arising from or expressing contrition: contrite words. I never walked on anybody's line. I'm not a monster. I'm not a rogue. I'm not a hooligan.'' Lehman has discussed the situation with Torrance and written letters to others involved in the snit. And the British press did acknowledge the gracious behavior of Stewart and O'Meara in victory. This weekend we'll find out what British golf fans think. Part-time tour player and television commentator Curtis Strange is on the short list. Leonard would not mind seeing Strange in charge. He attended the University of North Carolina before turning professional in 1985. . But the insightful commentary by Johnny Miller during this year's event suggests he'd be a good captain, too. Trouble is, some tour pros might not want to play for Miller after his pointed comments. And if the furor over the conduct of the fans and American team doesn't die down, maybe the PGA should look for someone with diplomatic credentials. Maybe Henry Kissinger or former President Jimmy Carter could fit the captain's job into their schedule. Coming to America: Spain's Sergio Garcia might just develop a rivalry with Tiger Woods after all. Garcia, the runner-up to Woods in the PGA Championship, will split his time between the European and PGA tours next year. He doesn't know which one will get most of his attention but both tours will be the better for it. Garcia will compete in the annual Skins game with defending champion O'Meara, Stewart and David Duval. Senior skins: The original skins - Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Gary Player - will reunite for a special millennium celebration in the 2000 Senior Skins Game. The $600,000 event will be Super Bowl weekend at the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. Palmer, Nicklaus, Watson and Player were featured in the inaugural Skins Game in 1983. Player won the first title, pocketing $150,000 with a four-foot putt on the 17th hole. The same four were paired again in 1984 with Nicklaus taking that title, winning $249,000. LPGA LPGA abbr.
