EURO SOA MARKET TO GROW OVER $138 MILLION BY 2005.

The European market for semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) will grow from $1.1 million in 2000 to over $138 million in 2005, a compound average annual growth (CAAG) rate of over 150%. This is primarily due to the use of SOAs in metro, enterprise, CATV and long-haul networks.

Earlier, overshadowed by erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), the technology is relatively immature and the markets are in their early stages. "However, SOAs can be used at wavelengths that EDFAs cannot operate in, such as the 1,310-nm band," says Marc Liggio, VP of Broadband Research for Allied Business Intelligence (ABI). "This makes them promising for networks with a great number of optical switching and add/dropping, and for pre-amplification purposes."

This and more on the European market for semiconductor optical amplifiers can be found in ABI's new report, "Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers: The European Market for SOAs." The study covers this once-neglected technology that is now attracting greater interest for metro and for short-haul applications. The study describes and forecasts the European market for SOAs in four application segments: CATV Networks, Enterprise Networks, Long-Haul Networks and Metro Networks. These markets, and the market as a whole, are forecast annually through 2005.

"Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers: The European Market for SOAs." is one of a series of ABI reports focusing on the optical components market in Europe. Other reports in this series include optical transmitters and optical photodiodes. In addition to the main market analysis and data, this series of reports presents information on the countries, regulatory and business issues, applications and carriers. The series divides the overall market into six application segments -- Access Networks, CATV, enterprise Networks (mainly SANs), Local Area Networks (LAN), Long-Haul Networks and Metro Networks -- and ten regions/countries, forecasting the size of these markets annually through 2005.

Allied Business Intelligence Inc is an Oyster Bay, NY-based technology research think tank specializing in communications and emerging technology markets. ABI publishes strategic research on the broadband, wireless, electronics, networking and energy industries.
