AUTHOR Sebastian Barry was congratulated yesterday after winning the Costa Book Of The Year award.

The 53-year-old Dubliner scooped the EUR27,000 prize for his novel The Secret Scripture despite judges being unhappy with the ending.

Arts Minister Martin Cullen said the award was a wonderful personal accomplishment for Barry.

He added: "I extend my congratulations to Sebastian Barry for his outstanding achievement in winning the Costa Award.

"It is due recognition for the incredible talent and creativity that has been fostered by the Irish literary community.

"And it is a wonderful personal accomplishment for Sebastian."

The novel focuses on an elderly woman who, on nearing her 100th birthday, struggles to cope when the nursing home where she has spent the final years of her life closes.
