in the 10,000 meters Monday in an Olympic-record time of 27 minutes, 7.34 seconds, ahead of Paul Tergat Paul Kibii Tergat (born June 17, 1969) is a Kenyan professional athlete. He held the world record in the marathon from 2003 to 2007, with a time of 2:04:55, and is regarded as one of the most accomplished long-distance runners of all time.  of Kenya (27:08.17) and Salah Hissou Salah Hissou (Arabic: صلاح هسو) (born January 16, 1972 in Ait Taghia) is a long-distance runner from Morocco, who won the gold medal over 5000m at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics in Seville.  of Morocco (27:28.59).

``I always had problems with the Kenyans at the end of races,'' Gerbrselassie said afterward. ``So I tried to reverse the situation. The result of this plan was a second half as fast as I could run, with a long surge at the 9-kilometer mark.''

Gerbrselassie has the 5,000 meters to run to complete his double, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since 1980. Since he owns the world record in both events - the first man to do so simultaneously since Kenya's Henry Rono Henry Rono (born February 12, 1952 in Kapsabet) is a former Kenyan athlete, considered a seminal figure of Kenyan distance running. Biography
Rono was born in Nandi Hills, Kenya, into the Nandi tribe. He started running while at primary school.
in 1982 - his chances look better than promising.

The first round of the 5,000 is Wednesday, with the finals set for Saturday. He's hoping he has enough energy left.

``Frankly speaking,'' he said, ``I have never been so tired after an important race like today.''

In other events Monday, Ilke Wyludda of Germany won the women's discus with a throw of 228 feet, 6 inches; Svetlana Masterkova of Russia captured the women's 800 meters in 1:57.73, and Marie-Jose Perec of France set an Olympic record in winning the women's 400 meters in 48.25.

And Mike Powell had to bow out of the long jump - won by Carl Lewis - when he pulled up lame because of a groin-muscle injury.

Wyludda produced the world's longest throw this year to win the discus by 10 feet, 5 inches, the widest margin of victory in the event at the Olympics since 1952.

All five of her valid throws proved superior to any one from the opposition. Natalya Sadova of Russia won the silver while Elya Zvereva of Bulgaria took the bronze.

In the women's 800, Masterkova led the race from start to finish. Ana Fidelia Quirot Ana Fidelia Quirot (born March 23, 1963 in Palma Soriano) is an athlete from Cuba, who specialised in the 800 m but was also successful over 400 m.

Quirot won a silver medal at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and a bronze medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics in
, a Cuban who suffered severe burns in a household accident and made a courageous comeback to even compete in the Olympics, won the silver in 1:58.11. Maria Lurdes Mutola of Mozambique took the bronze at 1:58.71.

Gerbrselassie marveled at the crowd at Olympic Stadium and said the ovation he received ``was one of the happiest moments of my track life so far.''

It was a bit less euphoric for Tergat. ``We (Kenyans) tried to make the pace in the second 5K faster because both Hissou and Haile are also in the 5K and we believed that they would not want to hurt themselves so much,'' Tergat said. ``But obviously, Haile had more left than we thought.''

Washington advances: Anthony Washington, a serious threat to become the first U.S. Olympic gold medalist in the discus since 1976, says he has only two serious opponents in his way.

``I think it will take at least 68.5 (meters, 224 feet, 9 inches) to win,'' Washington said. ``There are only three guys who can throw that far.''

The other two, he says, are Lars Riedel of Germany and Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania. They join Washington in Wednesday night's final.

Washington is the only serious U.S. threat for the country's first gold medal in the discus since Mac Wilkins. American Adam Setliff also qualified.
