ETHANOL-BLENDED GASOLINES APPROVED FOR THE ECOLOGO (M)
MISSISSAUGA, Ont., Oct.2, /CNW/ - Co-op ethanol-blended gasolines are now approved by the Environmental Choice (M) Program (ECP) to carry the EcoLogo designating them as an Environmental Choice (the EcoLogo and Environmental Choice are official marks of Environment Canada).
The fuels, Co-op Ethanol Mid-Grade and Co-op Ethanol Premium, are blended with a minimum of five per cent, by volume, of ethanol, the remaining part being gasoline. The ethanol is produced in Ontario from Ontario-grown corn. Ethanol-blended gasolines are cleaner burning than conventional gasolines and help conserve fossil fuels. Ethanol generates more energy than is used to produce it.
The Environmental Choice Board, appointed by the federal Minister of the Environment, sets the criteria for certification. The Environmental Choice Program then drafts the guidelines for consideration by the Board. The ECP recently granted Co-op ethanol-blended fuels licence to use the EcoLogo. The EcoLogo helps consumers find products which ease the burden on the environment.
UCO Petroleum Inc., a joint venture between the farm supply co-operative United Co-operatives of Ontario (UCO) and Sunoco, Inc., introduced Ontario's first and only widely-available ethanol-blended gasolines in May.
"We want to give Ontario consumers an environmental choice at the gas station. Now Co-op Ethanol Mid-Grade and Co-op Ethanol Premium will be clearly marked as that choice with the EcoLogo," says Glen Perschbacher, Vice President and General Manager of UCO Petroleum Inc. UCO Petroleum Inc. will apply to ECP to use the EcoLogo on its Co-op Ethanol Regular gasoline to be introduced later this month.
Co-op ethanol gasolines are available at Co-op and UCO Petroleum gas stations in Southern Ontario including at Port Elgin Co-op, Ilderton Co-op, Durham Co-op, Hanover Co-op, Kincardine Co-op, Listowel Co-op, the Mount Forest Branch of North Wellington Co-operative Services Inc., Teeswater District Co-operative Inc., Woodstock Co-op, Norfolk Co-operative Company Limited in Courtland and Simcoe, Strathroy Co-op, Belle River branch of La Co-operative de Pointe-aux-Roches, Chatham Co-op on Park Avenue and at two other Chatham locations, Drayton District Co-operative, Thornbury Co-op, Guelph UCO Propane and in Markdale, Owen Sound, Thamesville, Clinton, Seaforth, and Hepworth. As of Oct. 9, Georgetown UCO Gas Bar will also carry Co-op Ethanol Mid-Grade and Co-op Ethanol Premium.
