MICHAEL ESSIEN has issued an apology to the Ghana FA for going AWOL before an international friendly against Angola.

The Chelsea midfielder, Inter Milan's ex-Portsmouth striker Sulley Muntari and Rennes forward Asamoah Gyan failed to make the trip for last Wednesday's match.

Head coach Milovan Rajevac threatened the trio with sanctions, but Essien will be hoping the matter is now resolved after his written apology. Muntari also wrote to the GFA, but Gyan has yet to follow their example.

Essien's apology may force Chelsea chief Carlo Ancelotti to seek clarity over the incident as he says his midfielder had permission to miss the friendly.

"It is simple. He asked the manager of Ghana if he could avoid the game on Wednesday and we gave him a day of rest and it was no problem," said the Blues boss.

"I didn't speak with the Ghana manager. I spoke only with Essien."
