ESKIMO PIE TAKES A $72,000 BITE OUT OF THE NATIONAL DEBT

RICHMOND, Va., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- When it comes to reducing the national debt, Americans have cast their vote in favor of Eskimo Pie Corporation's "Eat The National Debt" program. Families across the United States helped take a bite our of our debt by purchasing more than 1.4 million boxes of Eskimo Pies on-a-stick, which raised $71,894.
Today, with Senator John Warner, (R-VA) at his side, Eskimo Pie Corporation President and CEO, David Clark, turned over the "cold" cash in the form of 1,437,890 nickels to the Deputy Commissioner of the Public Debt, Van Zeck.
"Each one of these nickels represents a vote by the American people that it's time we address the nation's number one problem...our national debt," said Clark. "We know this is only a small part of the solution, but perhaps it will help convince our leaders that it's time fiscal responsibility prevails over special interest and party allegiances."
Eskimo Pie unveiled the program in early March by promising to donate five cents for each box of Eskimo Pie and Sugar Freedom Eskimo Pie brand ice cram bars-on-a-stick sold between March 8 and April 4. Eskimo Pie utilized IRI, a nationally recognized market research firm, to measure sales during the period.
Eskimo Pie has received numerous letters from across the country in support of the program. In addition, several companies have contacted Eskimo Pie in an effort to learn more about the program and how they might participate in similar programs.
"We set out to find a fun way to deal with a serious problem," noted Clark "...the response we have seen only proves that all Americans want to be a part of the solution, particularly if it's as tasty as an Eskimo Pie." He also encouraged other companies to develop similar programs.
Headquartered in Richmond, Va., Eskimo Pie Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: EPIE) created the frozen novelty industry in 1921 with the invention of the Eskimo Pie ice cream bar. The company markets branded frozen novelties, including its Eskimo Pie and Sugar Freedom Eskimo Pie line of products. Under a licensing agreement, Eskimo Pie also markets Welch's frozen fruit juice bars, Ghirardelli Premium Ice Cream Bars and Frozen Tootsie Roll Pops through a national network of licensed manufacturers.
