ESI New-Generation MLCC Tester Currently Being Evaluated by Major Japanese Customer.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq:ESIO ESIO Earth Sciences Information Office (Environmental Institute; University of Massachusetts) ), a leading provider of world-class photonics and laser systems for microengineering applications, today announced that it has shipped its first Model 3550 high capacitance capacitance, in electricity, capability of a body, system, circuit, or device for storing electric charge. Capacitance is expressed as the ratio of stored charge in coulombs to the impressed potential difference in volts.  multi-layer ceramic capacitor A Ceramic Capacitoris a capacitor constructed of alternating layers of metal and ceramic, with the ceramic material acting as the dielectric. Depending on the dielectric, whether Class 1 or Class 2, the degree of temperature/capacity dependence varies.  (MLCC MLCC Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor

The Model 3550 is targeted at the rapidly growing high capacitance segment of the MLCC industry where manufacturers are realizing higher profits. High capacitance MLCC's are used in applications of computers, flat panel displays A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time , automotive, and video games See video game console. .

ESI's Model 3550 high capacitance MLCC tester is the first product released in a family of new-generation MLCC testers that are based on an innovative platform. ESI (Edge Side Includes) A markup language for Web pages that enables elements of a Web page to be dynamically assembled in servers distributed throughout the Internet.  developed this platform to offer enabling capability and unparalleled low cost of ownership to its customers.

The Model 3550 provides a unique tool for powerful process development which results in improved time to market. Additionally, and more importantly, the Model 3550's high speed reduces total operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales  through reliable and repeatable sorting. Leveraging ESI's patented rotary handling technology, the precision handler can test and sort up to 540,000 MLCC chips per hour, a level of productivity that is about three to four times greater than typical high capacitance MLCC testers, including ESI's. The range of MLCC chips tested with the Model 3550 varies, with the smallest of these measuring only .016 inches by .008 inches.

"With the advanced electrical testing capabilities of the Model 3550, MLCC manufacturers are now able to test high value devices with unusual precision and productivity. As a result, MLCC devices will successfully compete against other types of high value capacitors. We are confident that the addition of the Model 3550 enhances ESI's leadership position in the MLCC industry," commented Vernon Cooke, ESI passive components product marketing manager.
