EQUITABLE SHAREHOLDERS ELECT DIRECTORS AND RATIFY APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT AUDITOR

 NEW YORK, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Shareholders of The Equitable Companies Incorporated (NYSE: EQ) elected 17 members of the board of directors and ratified the selection of an independent auditor at the company's annual meeting today.
 Richard H. Jenrette, chairman and chief executive officer, conducted the meeting in the auditorium of the company's headquarters at 787 Seventh Avenue in New York City.
 Election of Directors
 At the meeting, shareholders voted the following to one-year terms of the board of directors (all were previous board members): Claude Bebear, Jean-Claude Damerval, Joseph L. Dionne, William T. Esrey, Jean- Rene Fourtou, Donald J. Greene, John T. Hartley, John H. F. Haskell Jr., W. Edwin Jarmain, Richard H. Jenrette, Winthrop Knowlton, Arthur L. Liman, Joseph J. Melone, Didier Pineau-Valencienne, George J. Sella Jr., Sir Douglas W. G. Wass and Dave H. Williams.
 Appointment of Auditor
 Shareholders at the annual meeting also ratified the appointment of Price Waterhouse as independent auditor of The Equitable for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 1993.
