EQUIPMENT FAILURE CUTS AREA POWER.

NEWHALL - About 300 Santa Clarita-area residents lost electrical power Tuesday after a piece of underground equipment failed and sparked a small fire, officials from Southern California Edison Southern California Edison (or SCE Corp), the largest subsidiary of Edison International (NYSE: EIX), is the primary electricity supply company for much of Southern California. It provides 11 million people with electricity.  said.

Sheriff's deputies responded shortly after 2 p.m. to a report of a manhole-like cover partially blown from its position at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Wiley Canyon Road, authorities said.

``It was a relatively small incident that originally affected about 300 people,'' said Gil Alexander, an Edison spokesman. ``We were able to restore power to about 50 (residences) within seconds.''

Alexander said he could not yet estimate when full power would be restored.
