``They had seen us do some items,'' said Self. ``They felt it was suitable and appropriate to participate in the event.''

Members are all experienced equestrians.

Bruce Thomas, 43, said he has been riding most of his life. His wife, Brenda, 44, also a member, has been riding for 20 years. They signed up after learning the Palmdale station was forming the group.

``We saw the fliers and thought it would be a good chance to ride with good people,'' said Thomas, who is a sand and gravel truck owner-operator.

Plunkett, a Quartz Hill resident for seven years, said she got started with the unit after she was given an application by her mother-in-law.

``I thought it would be a great way to help the police and understand what they go through,'' she said. ``I wanted to see if I can make a difference. So far we have made a difference. It feels great.''
