EPILEPSY CAUSE GETS $1.6 MILLION PARKE-DAVIS GRANT; LARGEST CORPORATE COMMITMENT EVER TO THE EPILEPSY MOVEMENT

NEW YORK, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Epilepsy Foundation of America (EFA) announced today a major gift to the nation's epilepsy movement from the Parke-Davis Division of the Warner-Lambert Company (NYSE: WLA).
According to EFA President Timothy A. Pedley, M.D., Parke-Davis has pledged $1.6 million to the foundation and its local affiliates for a broad range of education, research and family service programs benefiting people with epilepsy in 1993.
A check representing the company's support of EFA projects was presented to Pedley by Lene Ulrich, senior product manager for Dilantin, on Saturday evening, April 24, during ceremonies at the New York Hilton Hotel in New York.
In announcing the contribution, Pedley said: "This is the largest commitment any company has ever made to the epilepsy cause. We are extremely grateful to Warner Lambert and Parke-Davis for their generosity and for recognizing the importance of EFA's education and information services in helping people with epilepsy and their families cope with the challenges of a seizure disorder." Pedley also noted that the company recently awarded 14 college scholarships to students with epilepsy.
The gift to EFA will be used in part for the dissemination of family education materials and the expansion of parent and family support groups and special projects in local communities. Funds are also being provided for continuing support of EFA's National Epilepsy Library and epilepsy research fellowships.
The National Epilepsy Library maintains a database of more than 6,000 scientific reports, journal articles, monographs, books, symposia proceedings and similar authoritative sources of information of epilepsy. It is believed to be the largest cross-disciplinary collection of epilepsy-related materials in the world. Parke-Davis has provided major support for the collection over the past 10 years.
Epilepsy affects 2.5 million Americans, more than 400,000 of whom are children. The Epilepsy Foundation and its local affiliates are the leading sources of information and assistance for families often faced with barriers to education, employment, and needed social and rehabilitative services.
The foundation, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, serves about 80 state and local affiliates nationwide. It is headquartered in Landover, Md.
