Whitman
announced $10 million in grant funding for fiscal year 2002 for coastal
and Great Lakes Great Lakes, group of five freshwater lakes, central North America, creating a natural border between the United States and Canada and forming the largest body of freshwater in the world, with a combined surface area of c.95,000 sq mi (246,050 sq km). states, territories, and local health agencies. The
funds are to be used to upgrade monitoring systems for beach water
quality and improve how the public is notified of beach warnings and
closures. At the 18 March 2002 press conference announcing the grants,
Whitman said, "With this money we hope to reduce the risk of
exposure to disease-causing microorganisms in the water while people
enjoy our incredible water resources."
