conducted inspections in March to ensure that soil and groundwater remediation systems are operating properly.

The soil remediation consists of a soil vapor extraction Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) is an in situ process for soil remediation where contamination is removed from soil by carrying it out through a medium such as air or steam. The extracted soil vapors are separated into liquids and vapors, and each stream is treated as necessary.  (SVE SVE

The SVE system will operate until soil cleanup levels established in the Agency's 1991 Record of Decision are attained. It is expected to be completed within two to three years.

Cleanup of groundwater contamination is being addressed through on-site pumping and treatment of contaminated water from recovery wells. Cleanup of the groundwater may take up to thirty years.

The Medley Farm site is located in Cherokee County, six miles south of Gaffney. State and Federal environmental officials learned of potential contamination at the site in 1983. An EPA investigation of the site revealed the presence of numerous drums and other containers of wastes, many of which were damaged and leaking.

More than 5,000 drums and other containers were removed from the site during the summer of 1983. The soil and groundwater are contaminated with volatile organic compounds.

The site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL 1. NPL - New Programming Language. IBM's original (temporary) name for PL/I, changed due to conflict with England's "National Physical Laboratory." MPL and MPPL were considered before settling on PL/I. Sammet 1969, p.542.
