) today announced that it will begin the second phase of the removal site assessment on May 14, 2001 at the Anniston Lead site in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama Calhoun County, Alabama is a county of the U.S. state of Alabama. Its name is in honor of John C. Calhoun, famous member of the United States Senate from South Carolina. As of 2000 the population was 112,249. It is included in the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Statistical Area.  to determine the nature and extent of lead contamination.

The assessment is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency's Emergency Response and Removal Branch.

The assessment will include several scheduled phases of sampling and is expected to be completed by Friday, May 18, 2001. Samples will be collected in Anniston and surrounding areas.
