EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON OCT. 15 IN DOUGLASVILLE, GA.,
REGARDING THE BASKET CREEK SURFACE IMPOUNDMENT SUPERFUND SITE
ATLANTA, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region IV, will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15, in Douglasville, Ga., regarding the Basket Creek Surface Impoundment Superfund site.
The meeting will be held at Fairplay Middle School, 8309 Highway 166, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Officials from EPA will provide information, answer questions and address citizen concerns about activities planned to clean up the Basket Creek Surface Impoundment Site on Basket Creek Road. Representatives from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will be present to address health concerns.
EPA plans to treat approximately 1,000 tons of contaminated soil and sludge and dispose of the treated material off-site. EPA has constructed a building over the impoundment area. Fumes from volatile organic chemicals in the enclosed impoundment area will be vented and burned. The remaining soil will be hauled away and disposed of. Cleanup of an adjacent site, the Basket Creek Drum Disposal site, was completed in July 1992. During cleanup of the drum disposal site, more than 4,400 crushed drums and 12,950 tons of contaminated soil were shipped to permitted hazardous waste disposal facilities.
