EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON MAY 14 IN ISLAND, KY.
REGARDING THE BRANTLEY LANDFILL SUPERFUND SITE
ATLANTA, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on May 14, in Island, Ky., regarding the Brantley Landfill Superfund site.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Island Elementary School on Highway 431 in Island. Citizens interested in learning more about activities at the site or those who wish to provide information about the site are encouraged to attend the meeting.
Officials from EPA will discuss the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) and ways the community may become involved in the Superfund process. The RI will determine the nature and extent of contamination, while the FS will evaluate alternatives to address any contamination found. The investigation will be conducted by Barmet Aluminum Corporation under terms of a consent order between EPA and Barmet. EPA and the Commonwealth of Kentucky are overseeing the RI field work, which began in April 1992.
The four-acre site was used by Barmet Aluminum Corporation to dispose of salt cake fines, a by-product of Barmet's secondary aluminum recovery operation. Salt cake fines are dust-like material containing various contaminants that react with water to form gases, including ammonia, methane, hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide. Approximately 250,000 tons of salt cake fines were disposed of at the site during the period from May 1978 until November 1980. In 1990, the site was added to EPA's National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites because of its potential for contaminating air and groundwater.
EPA has established a repository and has placed information regarding the Brantley Landfill Superfund site at Island City Hall, 160 South First St., Island, Ky.
