EPA TO CONDUCT CHEMICAL SAFETY AUDITS AT OCCIDENTAL CHEMICAL AND JONES CHEMICALS IN MOBILE, ALA.

ATLANTA, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chemical Accident Prevention Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct chemical safety audits at Occidental Chemical Corporation and Jones Chemicals, Inc., in Mobile, Ala., during the week of March 29.
The Occidental Chemical Corporation facility produces chlorine, caustic soda, hydrogen and sodium silicate. Jones Chemicals, Inc. repackages chlorine and produces and distributes industrial strength bleach and other industrial chemicals.
Chemical safety audits are part of the agency's Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Program. They are routinely conducted at various facilities throughout the eight southeastern states in EPA Region IV.
During the audits, EPA will examine the facilities' chemical processes and equipment; their maintenance, operating, storage, training and safety procedures; and management's commitment to chemical accident prevention and safety. Also, EPA will review the facilities' contingency planning and dispersion modeling for accidental releases, should they occur.
EPA will coordinate the audits with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the Local Emergency Planning Committee, and the local fire department.
Occidental Chemical Corporation, Jones Chemicals, Inc., and similar facilities which use regulated chemicals are required to notify federal and/or state and local officials of accidental releases of hazardous substances in amounts in excess of established minimum quantities. In addition, these facilities must report annually to state and local officials on the types and amounts of hazardous substances on-site in quantities above established threshold levels. Also, they may be required to report to EPA and to the state their annual emissions of certain toxic chemicals which enter the air, water and land.
EPA will prepare technical reports describing each audit, including findings and recommendations. The reports are expected to be completed within four to six weeks. Copies of the audit reports will be made available to the public upon completion. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the reports should contact J.D. Deutsch, U.S. EPA Region IV, 345 Courtland St. N.E., Atlanta, GA 30365.
