EPA TO BEGIN SUPERFUND CLEANUP AT THE CAROLINA CREOSOTING CORPORATION SITE IN LELAND, N.C. ATLANTA, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will begin a Superfund hazardous waste cleanup at the Carolina Creosoting Corporation site in Leland, Brunswick County, N.C., on Monday, Nov. 16. The cleanup will take place under the authority and direction of EPA's Emergency Response and Removal Branch. The initial phase of the cleanup is expected to be completed in approximately one month. The cost for the entire cleanup is estimated at $330,000. During this phase of the cleanup, EPA will treat and dispose of contaminated rainwater in the concrete dike area and water stored in tanks; remove creosote sludge from the containment area and stockpile on-site for treatment or disposal; decontaminate surfaces and debris in the concrete storage area and the main operation/boiler building; excavate contaminated soil and debris and stockpile on-site; and conduct sampling to ensure cleanup goals have been attained. The Carolina Creosoting Corporation site is located on Eastbrook Road in Leland. The site is a former wood treating facility. It consists of a production area with 10 storage tanks, a process building and a landfarm which previously was used to land apply sludges from a lagoon. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), also known as "Superfund," and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare or the environment.
