EPA Settles Action Against GF Office Furniture, Ltd for Alleged Violations of the Underground Storage Tank Regulations.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  announced today the settlement of an administrative enforcement action against GF Office Furniture, Ltd, of Gallatin, Tennessee for alleged violations of the Underground Storage Tank An Underground Storage Tank (UST), in United States environmental law, is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground.  (UST) provisions of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), enacted in 1976, is a Federal law of the United States contained in 42 U.S.C. ยงยง6901-6992k. Under the terms of the Consent Agreement and Consent Order, the company has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $63,000 to the United States Treasury. Additionally, the Order requires the company to bring their facility into compliance with UST regulations.

The Administrative Complaint alleged several violations including: failure to timely submit notification of the release of hazardous substances from the UST systems, and failure to contain, characterize and remediate the release of hazardous substances in accordance with requirements.

 developed the UST regulations to prevent leaks and spills, correct problems caused by them, and to ensure that owners and operators of USTs can pay for correcting any problems created if their USTs leak. Leaking USTs can result in serious consequences; such as fires and explosions, contamination of drinking water and damage to lakes and streams.
