The Company was founded in 1901 by King C. Gillette King Camp Gillette (January 6, 1855 – July 9, 1932) was an American businessman, popularly known as the inventor of the safety razor. While Gillette did improve the design of the safety razor (patent US775134), his true invention was an inexpensive, high profit-margin stamped , inventor of the safety razor. Headquarters are in Boston, where its largest manufacturing plant is also located. The Company's brands include Gillette blades and razors and other grooming products; Paper Mate, Parker and Waterman writing instruments; Braun electric shavers and small electric appliances; and Oral-B toothbrushes and oral care products. Amid rapid geographic expansion in recent years, Mr. Zeien has placed top priority on worldwide environmental standards. He explained this global approach in a recent video for employees. Discussing the Company's stringent air emissions targets, he cited two Gillette plants located a world apart. "The air above us is the same whether it comes out of Bhiwadi, India, or whether it comes out of South Boston," he said. Dr. A. Wallace Hayes, Vice President, Corporate Product Integrity, said the outstanding environmental records of the three plants made them ideal sites for developing independent verification procedures. "We wholeheartedly whole·heart·ed adj. Marked by unconditional commitment, unstinting devotion, or unreserved enthusiasm: wholehearted approval. whole support encouraging industry to take greater responsibility for self-monitoring," Dr. Hayes said. "Allowing facilities demonstrating outstanding environmental management practices to be free from compliance inspections will cut bureaucracy and free EPA resources for other tasks." Gillette implemented an aggressive pollution prevention program in 1990. The Company believes the most effective means of reducing the environmental risks from hazardous pollutants is to deal with the problem at the process stage, rather than seeking end-of-the-pipe solutions. By year-end 1994, the Pollution Prevention Program achieved an estimated 75 percent reduction in hazardous emissions. "We believe our experience protecting the environment can help other companies, and we are ready to work closely with the EPA," said Dr. Hayes. CONTACT: THE GILLETTE COMPANY Stephen K.
