Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC SAIC - http://saic.com. ) today announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. ). The certificate of appreciation acknowledges the SDC "for outstanding support to EPA in its information management response to the events of September 11, 2001."

In less than one week, SAIC's SDC created and delivered a single, integrated online database that housed the results of environmental sampling data taken by the multiple local, state, and federal agencies, including EPA, at the World Trade Center and throughout New York New York, state, United States

 for local, state, and federal emergency responders and decision makers, as well as the public, on environmental conditions in the area.

SAIC was able to integrate and load data in various formats into the database, build additional query tools, develop a geographic interface to the data, and provide Web-enabled dynamic query results taken from the EPA homepage to display monitoring results in record time.

In presenting the certification of appreciation, Debra Villari, associate director for the Information Access Division, characterized the SDC's efforts as a "very important part of the Agency's response." Ms. Villari said that a broad array of individuals, including teachers, community activists, schoolchildren schoolchildren school nplécoliers mpl;

, and others, have made use, and continue to make use, of the systems as a reliable source of data and information, providing a service that would otherwise be unavailable.

In accepting the award, Andy Meranda, SAIC manager of the SDC, said, "We are honored to help the EPA and our nation recover and rebuild. The success of the SDC speaks to the quality and dedication of our staff, of IT and environmental professionals; the substantial investment we have made in mirroring EPA's technical environment; and the certified management procedures we have in place. Combining these attributes with EPA's vision and partnership enabled us to deliver this mission-critical support."

The SDC continues to provide support to EPA's response efforts by building and maintaining systems that enable the public to secure testing and cleanup assistance.

The SDC recently celebrated 11 years of providing that agency with the highest level of technical proficiency. Recently reassessed at Level 3 of the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model(R) (CMM (Capability Maturity Model) A process developed by SEI in 1986 to help improve, over time, the application of an organization's supporting software technologies. (R)) for software, the SDC specializes in providing EPA programs with a software engineering environment built on the consistent application of proven software development practices.

The reassessment was awarded after an SEI-authorized evaluation team conducted a thorough review of software process practices within the SDC. Twenty-one projects representing the SDC's software development capability were evaluated, including projects that have demonstrably advanced EPA's e-government posture by integrating stove-piped systems, increasing public access, reducing administrative and reporting burdens on the regulated community and state partners, and enhancing data integrity.
