The awards recognize State Public Water Supply Supervision Programs for Safe Drinking Water Act implementation and individual water systems for drinking water treatment, distribution and system management.
This year's recipients were chosen from among three categories based on the population served by the water system. The winner in the Large System category, serving populations greater than 10,000, is the Peoples Water Service Company of Pensacola, Fla. The Medium System winner, serving populations between 3,300 and 10,000, is Piedmont Water Works of Piedmont, Ala. The Small System winner, serving a population of fewer than 3,300, is the Echols Water System, Inc. of Starkville, Miss.
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management's Public Water Supply Branch was named the most outstanding State Water Program in EPA Region IV. The winner was determined by a committee consisting of representatives from EPA Headquarters, EPA Region IV, and the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators.
EPA will award plaques and individual certificates to the winners in recognition of their efforts to maintain and protect drinking water and public water supplies.
