EPA Issues Record of Decision for the Ross Metals SuperFund Site in Rossville, Fayette County, Tennessee.


ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1999--

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  announced today that a Record of Decision (ROD) has been signed for the Ross Metals Superfund site in Rossville, Fayette County, Tennessee Fayette County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population was 28,806. The 2005 Census Estimate placed the population at 34,458 [1]. It was named after the Marquis de la Fayette, French hero of the American Revolution. . The ROD outlines the remedy that will be used to address contamination at the site.

The major components of the ROD include the following: -0-
    - decontamination, demolition, and off-site disposal of pavement
      and buildings with recycling of metal debris;
    - excavation of contaminated soil, landfill slag, and contaminated
      sediment with appropriate confirmation sampling;
    - backfill of excavated subsurface-soil areas and landfill with
      clean soil;
    - off-site disposal of soils, slag and sediment at an approved
      nonhazardous waste disposal facility; and
    - development of a maintenance and monitoring plan to assess the
      effectiveness of the cleanup action.


The selected remedy is protective of human health and the environment and is cost effective. This remedy utilizes permanent solutions and alternative treatment technologies, to the maximum extent practicable practicable adj. when something can be done or performed.  for the site. Because the remedy will not result in hazardous substance remaining on-site above health-based levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure, a five-year review will not be required for this remedial action A remedial action is a change made to a nonconforming product or service to address the deficiency.

Rework and repair are generally the remedial actions taken on products, while services usually require additional services to be performed to ensure satisfaction.
