EPA HANDS OFF ROCKETDYNE SITE CLEANUP.

Byline: Lisa Mascaro Staff Writer

Activists raised concerns Tuesday about the EPA's retreat from a long- planned study of radiation contamination at the former Rocketdyne Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors

The Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  said it will still play an oversight role, but activists worry that with possible federal budget cuts for cleanups nationwide, the survey might not be thorough enough.

``If there's no independent survey, if the budget for cleanup is cut ... the public will have no protection whatsoever,'' said activist Dan Hirsch.

However, the EPA EPA eicosapentaenoic acid.

This type of contamination typically arises from the rupture of underground storage tanks, application of pesticides, percolation of contaminated surface water to .

Instead, it has turned the work over to those responsible for cleaning up the site - in this case, the Energy Department - as has been the practice at other contaminated contaminated,

``We all agree there needs to be a study ... and what that study needs to be is not changing,'' said Jeff Scott Jeff Scott is an American public address announcer for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association.

The work group that monitors cleanup of chemical and nuclear contamination at the Rocketdyne site in the hills between Chatsworth and Simi Valley is expected to discuss the issue at its meeting tonight.

Activists mailed out 1,000 letters to community members about the public session that will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Vista Hotel, 999 Enchanted en·chant

For years, the community has been anticipating a study to determine the extent of contamination from the site where the Energy Department conducted nuclear energy research for decades.

California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer both have sent letters to EPA chief Christine Todd Whitman raising concerns about possible changes to the planned EPA study.

Nuclear and chemical contamination was found in the late 1980s, and nuclear energy research was shut down.
