EPA CITES MINING FIRM FOR FOULING CREEK BED.

The Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  has accused a Moorpark-area aggregate mining company of leaking oil, fuel and sediment sediment, mineral or organic particles that are deposited by the action of wind, water, or glacial ice. These sediments can eventually form sedimentary rocks (see rock).  into a nearby creek bed in violation of the federal Clean Water Act.

If the company fails to comply with federal regulations, it faces fines of $32,500 per day, Arcaute said.

Mine officials are aware of the violations and are working on a plan to correct the problem, said Terry Balog, an environmental consultant hired by the company.

The company expects to comply with Clean Water Act standards by September at the latest, Balog said.

``Wayne J. doesn't have a lot of work to do to come into compliance,'' he said. ``This sounds a lot worse than it is.''
