EPA Announces New Initiative to Assist Local Governments Meet Environmental Goals.

Two Universities in the Southeast Selected to Participate

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  has selected Georgia Institute of Technology Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Ga.; coeducational; state supported; chartered 1885, opened 1888. It is a member school in the university system of Georgia. Significant among its facilities and programs are the Frank H.  (Center for International Standards and Quality) in Atlanta, GA and the University of Florida University of Florida is the third-largest university in the United States, with 50,912 students (as of Fall 2006) and has the eighth-largest budget (nearly $1.9 billion per year). UF is home to 16 colleges and more than 150 research centers and institutes.  (Center for Training, Research, and Education for Environmental Occupations) in Gainesville, FL to become Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Local Resource Centers where local governments can go to make their operations more environmentally friendly Environmentally friendly, also referred to as nature friendly, is a term used to refer to goods and services considered to inflict minimal harm on the environment.[1] .

Nationally, eight centers have been selected and will be located in existing academic or other non-profit institutions that have a proven track record of providing high quality environmental assistance in their respective areas.

These Centers will assist local agencies in the design and adoption of environmental management systems. EMS improve overall environmental performance and compliance and meet environmental goals important to EPA EPA eicosapentaenoic acid.

, the community, and local citizens. Today's announcement supports EPA's overall policy of actively promoting adoption of EMS that help improve environmental performance and compliance.

The EMS management tool, used extensively in private industry, is now being adopted by a growing number of local governments, providing a structured process for identifying and then reducing a broad range of environmental impacts.

EPA will work with the Centers to help them better serve the needs of local and state agencies that wish to learn more about EMS and adopt them for their operations. Each Center also will share information on their activities through a publicly available on-line National Clearinghouse clearinghouse
