Horseradish horseradish

Hardy perennial plant (Armoracia lapathifolia) of the mustard family, native to Mediterranean lands and grown throughout the temperate zones. Its hotly pungent, fleshy root is used as a condiment and is traditionally considered medicinal.

The Horseradish Information Council has begun a quest to find the best original recipes - whether appetizer, side dish side dish

Recipes may be submitted by visiting the council's Web site at www.horseradish.org, and clicking on "recipe contest."

The first judging period runs through June, and the second from July through December. The grand prize winner in each time period will receive $200, and two runners-up each will win $25.

Winemakers' dinner - King Estate Winery and Willie's on 7th Street will host a dinner at 6 p.m. that features a wine from King Estate with each course. Cost is $60 per person. Reservations may be made by calling 485-0601.
