ENTREE NOTES.Byline: The Register-Guard Awards WINE 2004 Oregon State Fair The Oregon State Fair is the official state fair of the U.S. state of Oregon. It takes place every August-September in the state capital, Salem. The first unofficial state fair was held in 1858 (the date the state agency that runs the fair uses for its anniversary), and the Professional Wine Awards - The 2002 Pinot Noir, Walnut Creek Walnut Creek, residential city (1990 pop. 60,569), Contra Costa co., W Calif., in the San Francisco Bay area; inc. 1914. It is the trade and shipping center of an extensive agricultural area where walnuts are among the major product. Vintage, from High Pass Winery near Junction City was the Best of Show winner in the award celebration held last Thursday in Salem. The wine also was judged Best of Class-Red Vinifera. Willamette Valley Vineyards Willamette Valley Vineyards is a winery located in Turner, Oregon. The winery is the leading producer of Pinot Noir in Oregon[1], and also produces Dijon clone Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. of Turner won Best of Class-White Vinifera for its 2003 Pinot Gris. Brandy Peak Distillery of Brookings won Best of Class-Fortified and Brandy for its non-vintage grappa grap·pa n. An Italian brandy distilled from the pomace of grapes used in winemaking. [Italian, from Italian dialectal, grape stalk, brandy, of Germanic origin.] Noun 1. . The three top winners and seven other wineries received gold medals at the celebration. Gold medals also went to Ankeny Winery of Salem for its 2003 Pinot Gris, Belle Vallee Cellars of Corvallis for its 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Elvenglade Vineyard of Gaston for its 2003 Pinot Blanc, Iris Hill of Lorane for its 2002 Pinot Gris, LaVelle Vineyards of Elmira for its 2003 White Riesling (Estate), Lorelli Wines of Grants Pass for its 2000 Merlot (Marabella), and Weisinger's of Ashland for its 2001 Merlot (Estate). Wine tastings TODAY Ambrosia ambrosia (ămbrō`zhə), in Greek mythology, food and drink with which the Olympian gods preserved their immortality. Extraordinarily fragrant, ambrosia was probably conceived of as a purified and idealized form of honey. Restaurant and Bar - The September wine tasting and sale will feature 12 wines from Mt. Hood Distributors. The event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the restaurant, 174 E. Broadway. The $10 charge includes a taste of each wine and appetizers. Workshops SATURDAY Composting - The city of Eugene will sponsor a free hands-on composting workshop from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mathews Community Garden compost site, corner of 15th Avenue and Hayes Street.
