Extension Service offers

food preservation food preservation, methods of preparing food so that it can be stored for future use. Because most foods remain edible for only a brief period of time, people since the earliest ages have experimented with methods for successful food preservation.  event

"Make the Most of Summer Produce" is the theme of the 2004 Food Preservation/Safety Faire to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the OSU/Lane County Extension Service, 950 W. 13th Ave.

Participants will have the opportunity to visit several teaching stations to learn different methods of food preparation. Master food preservers will provide information on pressure canning green beans green beans

The cost of the workshop is $5. SATURDAY

Red Cross fund-raiser - The Waterfront Bar & Grill, 2210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will be the spot for Paint It Red 2, a fund-raiser for the local American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross. , beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for the dinner are $100 per person. Tables for eight are available for $1,200 and include special gifts, riverside seating and additional wine.

Tickets may be purchased at the Waterfront or at the Oregon Pacific Chapter of the Red Cross, 862 Bethel Drive. For information, call 344-5244.

SUNDAY

Barbecue in Veneta - The 49th annual Fern Ridge Pit Beef BBQ BBQ barbecue  will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the St. Catherine of Siena picnic grounds, 25181 E. Broadway, across from the city park in Veneta. Activities include a raffle, silent auction, games for kids and live music. A dinner of beef with secret sauce, cole slaw slaw

Adam's Place Restaurant - Adam's Place, at 30 E. Broadway, will host a four-course dinner featuring Australian wines from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22. Select vintages from Torbreck Vintners, located in the Barossa Valley in Australia, will be paired with cuisine crafted by head chef Jack Black. The price is $75 per person. Oregon Brewers Festival - Tom McCall Waterfront Park Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park is a park located on the west bank of the Willamette River in downtown Portland, Oregon. It is 36.59 acres comprised of 16 tax lots owned by the City of Portland.  in Portland is the site for the 17th annual Oregon Brewers Festival from noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. Seventy-two breweries will be represented. Admission to the event is free but a souvenir mug costs $3 and is required for tasting. A 7-ounce beer costs $2 and a 14-ounce beer costs $4.
